Our verdict

You’ll never tire of the stares you’ll get when driving a BMW i8, nor the perplexed looks when you try to explain its technology. It offers big performance and tiny emissions, yet remains a doddle to drive.

However, these are sports cars and, as such, performance and handling are paramount. In these areas the Porsche 911 is stronger. The fact that it has a more supple ride, a higher-quality interior and costs private buyers less to buy all cement its win.
