Car of the Year Awards 2023: Best small electric car to drive
This class embraces nimble city cars and family hatchbacks, as long as they are no more than 4.5 metres long...
Cupra Born 58kWh V1
Adding the right amount of seasoning can really enhance a dish, and that’s exactly what Cupra has done with the Born. You see, it’s based on the Volkswagen ID 3, but Cupra has spiced it up to the extent that it’s more rewarding to drive than not just its stablemate but also all other small electric cars, including the MG 4.
Being the sportier sibling, the Cupra Born gets lower and slightly stiffer suspension than the ID 3. As a result, it feels sharp and eager to turn in to corners, flowing along winding roads with reassuring poise.
Don’t think that this means comfort is compromised; the Born does an good job of soaking up lumps and bumps, even
if it’s not quite as cosseting as a Renault Megane E-Tech.
With a respectable range, strong performance and smart interior, the Born remains one of our favourite small electric cars. It isn’t £10k better than the MG 4 overall, but it’s the keen driver’s choice.
