SUVs are among the most popular cars on UK roads, and it's easy to see why. With their family-friendly interiors, raised driving positions and big boots, they're seen as the go-to choice for families on the move. It makes sense, then, that car makers are launching ever more SUVs to keep up with demand.

In fact, between now and the end of 2023, a staggering 31 new SUV models will be heading into UK showrooms. In this story, we'll tell you everything you need to know about each of them, so you can decide if it's worth waiting for. We'll also show you some of the models arriving later, in 2024 and beyond.

Estate

In the same way that Infiniti acts as Nissan’s premium arm, Lexus has a similar tie-in with Toyota. And since most of Toyota’s models are offered as hybrids, it’s no surprise to see the same from Lexus, although there are some traditional petrol engines, too.

The brand focuses heavily on SUVs – namely the NX and RX – but also has the CT hatchback, ES executive saloon and LS luxury car among its portfolio. More small and large SUVs are expected in the future.

Like Toyota, Lexus has built a very strong reputation for reliability and regularly finishes very close to the top of our annual Reliability Survey.

LEXUS

Lexus has been biding its time on electric cars, but now it's finally ready to dip its toes into the electric SUV water, and the first fully electric model from the brand will be the RZ.

We've driven a late-stage prototype version of the model, which shares many of its underpinnings with the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/toyota/bz4x/hatchback/review/n24187">Toyota bZ4X</a>. Most notable is its new steer-by-wire system, which will be optional&nbsp;and means there's no mechanical connection between the steering wheel and front wheels at all. Engineers say the set-up should make this big car feel like a small one to drive.

Two electric motors give the RZ power, and although final figures have yet to be revealed, the RZ is expected to have a range of more than 250 miles between charges.

We liked the RZ's premium interior, although you sit lower inside it than you might in some other <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-electric-suvs-2022/n23038">electric SUVs</a>.

Lexus RZ - Early 2023

Mercedes’ line-up is vast – ranging from the A-Class family hatchback through to staple saloons such as the C-Class and E-Class, and onwards towards multiple SUVs, luxury saloons and even sports cars. Coupés and convertibles are thrown into the mix as well.

As one of the ‘big three’ German brands, Mercedes most often finds itself competing with Audi and BMW but more recently has found itself fending off Jaguar and Volvo, too.

Mercedes models are known for comfort. One example of this is the E-Class, because while the Audi A6 has a plusher interior and the BMW 5 Series handles better, the E-Class is probably the most comfortable for a long motorway journey.

MERCEDES-BENZ

We've already been impressed by the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mercedes-benz/eqs/saloon/review/n24120">Mercedes&nbsp;EQS</a>&nbsp;saloon, and now&nbsp; that car's&nbsp;luxury and tech has been repackaged as an SUV – the EQS SUV.

Sharing its underpinnings, drive systems and battery with the regular EQS, the EQS SUV joins its saloon sibling in having a headline-grabbing electric range – in this case, up to 410 miles between charges. That's enough to get you from London to Manchester and back without stopping.

Charging can take as little as 31 minutes (if you can find a suitably powerful charging point), while your passengers can relax in a sumptuous interior complete with their own 11.6in tablet screens. You'll pay a hefty price for all this luxury, with the EQS SUV starting from a cool £129,170.

Mercedes EQS SUV - Early 2023

Hatchback

Once best known for its flame-spitting, rally-bred Imprezas, Subaru’s focus now is on cars that will appeal to a far wider audience, and especially one that values go-anywhere ability and no-nonsense values above all others.

The result is a mixed bag of offerings, none of which rise beyond being average in their class but most of which have facets that make them stand out from their rivals. Core to its range are the Forester and Outback SUVs, while the Levorg is a more conventional estate.

At other extremes, there’s also the BRZ, an entertaining coupé that is let down by its price and resale values, and of course the Impreza, which comes in a variety of forms, including a hot model.

SUBARU

SOLTERRA

The <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/subaru/solterra/hatchback/review/n25176">Subaru Solterra</a> is the Japanese brand's first ever fully electric car, and is the result of a collaboration with Toyota.

Two electric motors power the Solterra, giving it a healthy 215bhp, which is enough to reach 62mph in just 6.9sec – about the same time as a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/skoda/enyaq/estate/review/n22909">Skoda Enyaq</a>&nbsp;iV&nbsp;in 80X form.

We've already driven the Solterra on UK roads, where we were impressed by its refined nature and comfortable ride – as well as the promise of high resale values. Rivals can charge faster and are more practical for families, though.

Subaru Solterra - Early 2023

Tesla is a US brand&nbsp;that revolutionised&nbsp;the car industry, putting <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-electric-cars-2022/n17000">electric cars</a> in the limelight&nbsp;for the first time – helped by the personality and profile of boss Elon Musk.

Today, Tesla has a broader&nbsp;line-up than ever, with the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-3/saloon/review/n19010">Tesla Model 3</a> saloon&nbsp;and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-y/hatchback/review/n23624">Tesla Model Y</a> SUV the company's cheapest models. For those with bigger budgets or a need for more space, there's the larger <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-s/hatchback/review/n150">Tesla Model S</a> saloon and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-x/hatchback/review/n161">Tesla&nbsp;Model X</a> SUV.&nbsp;A&nbsp;new Roadster, complete with supercar-beating acceleration, is also in the works.

TESLA

MODEL X

The <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-x/hatchback/review/n161">Tesla Model X</a> is being treated to a raft of upgrades as part of a mid-life update. As well as a new interior featuring a 17in touchscreen infotainment system in landscape rather than portrait orientation, it will also receive a new model variant.

That model, called the Plaid, will be the most powerful version of the Model X, and will be able to get speed-hungry buyers to 60mph in just 2.5sec.

Tesla Model X - Early 2023

You're probably more familiar with the Q8 e-tron than you know. That's because, in pre-facelift form, it was known simply as the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/e-tron/estate/review/n18397">Audi e-tron</a>&nbsp;and has been on sale since 2018.

As part of a mid-life refresh, the Q8 e-tron gets bolder looks, revised air suspension that's designed to let you float over ruts and bumps in the road, and a significant upgrade in how far it can go between charges. Indeed, while entry-level versions of the previous e-tron could only get you up to 197 miles on a full charge, even the most basic Q8 e-tron can officially manage up to 305 miles between charges.

Prices start from £68,595, making the Q8 e-tron competitive next to other premium <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-electric-suvs-2022/n23038">electric SUVs</a> including the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/ix/4x4/review/n23569">BMW iX</a>.

Audi Q8 e-tron - Early 2023

The XM is the first SUV to be developed by BMW's M performance division, and that means it's as much about making you smile while you're behind the wheel as it is about getting you and your family from A to B.

To that end, it's powered by a 4.4-litre V8 engine working&nbsp;in conjunction with an electric motor to develop a heady 664bhp – enough to propel you to 62mph in&nbsp;4.3sec. The XM can officially run on the electric motor alone for up to 55 miles&nbsp;without using a drop of fuel, thanks to the 25.7kWh (usable capacity) battery pack.

Other highlights include four-wheel steering, which is designed to make this very big car&nbsp;feel more agile on city streets, and four-wheel drive to help maximise your traction on slippery surfaces.

Prices start from £144,980, making the XM considerably more expensive than most other <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-sports-suvs-2022/n20200">sports SUVs</a> (plug-in hybrid or otherwise).

BMW XM - Spring 2023

Honda is a company that doesn’t like to follow the crowd. So, while it competes in most of the traditional sectors of the car market, in each case it does something a little bit different.

The Jazz, for example, might look like just another rival to Britain’s best-selling car, the Ford Fiesta, but it’s actually much more practical than its rivals, with a flexible boot and Tardis-like interior.

The bigger Civic is also a practical choice, but it’s mainly distinguished by having eye-catching, love-it-or-hate-it styling, despite competing in a sector of the market that’s usually more conservative than a blue rosette.

And while it may not seem so radical now, Honda’s large SUV, the CR-V, was one of the first to forego any pretence of being an off-roader and instead focus on on-road driving dynamics.

HONDA

CR-V

The replacement for the current&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/honda/cr-v/estate/review/n44">Honda CR-V</a> doesn't change the SUV game dramatically,&nbsp;but aims to improve upon its predecessor in every way imaginable. It's still a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-hybrid-cars-2022/n17013">hybrid car</a> so it has an&nbsp;electric motor to do most of the work around town and on slower roads, before the 2.0-litre petrol engine joins the fray.

Entry-level versions of the CR-V will use front-wheel drive, while four-wheel drive will be optional to help you get the best traction on slippery roads.

Inside, buyers will find a 7.0in digital instrument display, and an infotainment touchscreen measuring up to 9.0in, depending on specification. Your family should have more space to stretch out than before, because the new CR-V is longer and wider than the car it replaces, and also has a slightly larger boot.

Prices should start from around £35,000, making the new CR-V competitive next to SUV rivals including the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/hyundai/santa-fe/4x4/review/n68">Hyundai Santa Fe</a> and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/toyota/rav4/4x4/review/n130">Toyota RAV4.</a>

Honda CR-V - Spring 2023

INEOS

GRENADIER

You might think that in the age of the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-electric-suvs-2022/n23038">electric SUV</a>&nbsp;there would be precious little space left for a rugged and utilitarian off-roader like the Ineos Grenadier, but for some buyers it will be just the ticket.

Inspired by the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/land-rover/defender/4x4/review/n21198">Land Rover Defender</a>, the Grenadier is available with seating for up to five passengers, but also as a two-seat commercial vehicle (with a 2088-litre load capacity). All versions are powered by 3.0-litre petrol and diesel engines from BMW. It can tow up to 3500kg and winch loads of up to 5500kg. It's priced from £55,000.

Ineos Grenadier - Spring 2023

The <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/2023-mercedes-eqe-suv-revealed/n25068">Mercedes EQE SUV</a> is the mid-point between the smaller <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mercedes-benz/eqb/estate/review/n24403">Mercedes EQB</a> and the larger and more luxurious EQS SUV.

Buyers will initially have four versions to choose from, but even entry-level 350+ models will be able to take you up to 366 miles between charges, according to official figures. There's also a sporty AMG-badged version, which gets up to 617bhp from its dual electric motors – enough to get you to 62mph in just 3.5sec.

Inside, you'll find a huge 17.7in infotainment screen, plus a separate 12.3in digital instrument cluster. You can add a third 12.3in screen for the front passenger as an option, giving the EQE SUV up to 55in of screen space (more than most TVs).

Mercedes EQE SUV - Spring 2023

Owned by Mercedes-Benz and with a reputation for making small, clever cars, Smart offers a striking, upmarket alternative to more conventional rivals.

It currently has a two-car line-up, the smaller of the two being the distinctive Fortwo, which, as its name suggests, is an ultra-short two-seater that uses an unusual rear-engined configuration to deliver the sort of turning circle that even London taxis can only dream of. It's a doddle to park in small spaces, too.

Smart's 'family car' is the Forfour, which is little more than a stretched version of the Fortwo, with a second row of seats and a larger boot. It's more of a natural rival for cars like the Hyundai i10 or Kia Picanto.

On paper, both cars come at a considerable price premium when compared with rivals, something it says is justified by its badge appeal and the technology in the cars.&nbsp;However, sales have been slow and there are often keen Target Price deals to be found.

SMART

The <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/smart/1/estate/review/n25016">Smart #1</a> is the first model to come from the German brand's&nbsp;refreshed line-up, and arrives as an electric SUV designed to take on rivals including the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/peugeot/2008/estate/review/n20552">Peugeot e-2008</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/cupra/born/hatchback/review/n23703">Cupra Born</a>.

It draws power from a 66kWh battery pack, giving an official range of up to 273 miles between charges. We like its spacious rear seats and the fact that it comes with lots of kit as standard, but rivals are more practical because they have larger boots.

Smart #1 - Spring 2023

The Avenger is the first all-electric model made by the US brand, but it has a lot in common with other electric SUVs including the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ds/ds-3/hatchback/review/n20402">DS 3 Crossback E-Tense</a> and the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/peugeot/2008/estate/review/n20552">Peugeot e-2008</a>.

Power comes from a single 154bhp electric motor, which draws its energy from a 51kWh (usable capacity) battery, giving a range of up to 248 miles, according to official tests. Charging should be quick if you can find one of the most powerful charging points, with 20-80% top-ups possible in just 24 minutes.

The Avenger's rugged interior features a 10.25in touchscreen infotainment system, and a 7.0in digital driver's display.

Jeep Avenger - June 2023

The AIWays U5 is a new electric family SUV that's likely to cost from around £40,000. It's assembled in China, but counts some of the biggest names in European car-making among its development team.

The U5's 63kWh (usable capacity) battery pack is relatively modest by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-electric-suvs-2022/n23038">electric SUV</a> standards, but it's still enough to give the U5 an official electric range of up to 249 miles between charges. With fast charging at up to 90kW,&nbsp;a 0-80% charge can potentially take&nbsp;as little as 40 minutes.

We were impressed with the U5's interior space when we drove it, and the 496-litre boot should have no trouble taking your family's holiday luggage.

AIWays U5 - Spring 2023

Munich-based BMW is most famous for its sports saloons, in particular the 3 Series and 5 Series. However, it actually builds almost every type of car imaginable: everything from two-seat convertibles to seven-seat MPVs.

The cheapest model in the BMW range is the 1 Series hatchback, which is a rival to the Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Volkswagen Golf. Meanwhile, at the other extreme is the i8 plug-in hybrid sports car, which costs more than £100,000.

BMW was also quick to capitalise on the rise of the SUV and now has six in its range: the X1, X2, X3, X4, X5 and X6.

All of this makes it one of the big three German prestige brands, along with Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

You may be familiar with the regular <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/x1/estate/review/n25006">BMW X1</a> as a classy and practical family SUV, but if you want to match those traits with grin-inducing performance, then this M135i version could be for you.

It will be the first sports-focused&nbsp;version of the X1 to go on sale, and is aimed squarely at the most powerful AMG version of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mercedes-benz/gla/hatchback/review/n17173">Mercedes GLA</a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/rs-q3/4x4/review/n20576">Audi RS Q3</a>. Power will come from the 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine&nbsp;you get in the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/1-series/hatchback/review/n20208">BMW M135i</a> hot hatch, giving it a potent 302bhp.

BMW X1 M135i - Summer 2023

The current <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/x5/4x4/review/n38">BMW X5</a> is one of our favourite luxury SUVs, but in 2023 that car and its <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/x6/4x4/review/n17306">BMW X6</a> coupé-SUV sibling will be getting a major overhaul.

As well as a bolder design on the outside, the facelift will give both cars a new curved dashboard design inside, more akin to that of the larger <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/x7/4x4/review/n19102">BMW X7</a>. It could be bad news for usability if both SUVs lose their physical climate controls, though.

The X5 and X6's engine line-up is likely to remain unchanged, meaning six-cylinder mild-hybrid petrol and diesel engines will still form the bulk of the range.

BMW X5 / X6 facelift

Whether you choose to call it a fully fledged SUV or not, the Purosangue is still the closest thing to one that&nbsp;Ferrari&nbsp;has ever attempted. While it's more practical than its stablemates, it still has performance figures to make it worthy of the legendary <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-performance-cars-2022/n23035">performance car</a> brand.

Under the bonnet is a monstrous 6.5-litre V12 petrol engine developing 715bhp, making this the most powerful <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-sports-suvs-2022/n20200">sports SUV</a> you can buy. Covering the 0-62mph sprint takes just 3.3sec, and the car's top speed is 192mph. With a price tag of an estimated £390,000, don't expect to see many&nbsp;Purosangues&nbsp;in the wild.

Ferrari Purosangue - Summer 2023

Ford now has a tie-up with Volkswagen, and as part of that it will produce a new Ford SUV based on the underpinnings of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/id4/estate/review/n22789">VW ID.4</a>.

Little is known about the new model so far, including what <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/new-car-deals/make/ford">Ford</a> plans to call it, but it is likely that&nbsp;buyers will be able to choose from rear and four-wheel drive, with either single or dual electric motors. It should be able to cover at least 200 miles between charges in real-world conditions.

Ford electric SUV - Summer 2023

Talk about taking an idea and running with it. The big-selling Mini hatchback is still at the core of the firm’s range, but its cute styling and relatively compact dimensions have been spun off into an estate (the Clubman) and an SUV (the Countryman), as well as a convertible.

Despite its small size, the Mini is a firmly premium product, and the three-door hatchback counts the Audi A1 and Volkswagen Polo among its key rivals.

The fact that Mini is owned by BMW brings some big advantages –&nbsp;not least the fact that its infotainment system is based on BMW’s industry-leading iDrive.

MINI

COUNTRYMAN

The <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mini/countryman/hatchback/review/n71">Mini Countryman</a> is the brand's take on the SUV, and for this all-new version plug-in hybrid (PHEV) power will be pushed to the fore.

Two PHEV versions will be available, but both will be based around a 1.5-litre engine and electric motor. In its most powerful form, the combination will produce a combined 322bhp – more than today's Countryman Cooper S E All4 <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-plug-in-hybrid-cars-2022/n22743">plug-in hybrid</a>.

A range of 1.5 and 2.0-litre petrol engines will also be offered, as well as a sporty version wearing the John Cooper Works – or JCW – badge. The new Countryman will be bigger than the current version, to improve space interior and boot space, and&nbsp;will continue to share parts with the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/x1/estate/review/n25006">BMW X1</a>.

Mini Countryman - Summer 2023

The third model to wear the Polestar badge is an <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-electric-suvs-2022/n23038">electric SUV</a> that will be a rival to the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/2023-audi-q8-e-tron-electric-suv-revealed/n25150">Audi Q8 e-tron</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/ix/4x4/review/n23569">BMW iX</a>.

The aptly named Polestar 3 is powered by two electric motors together producing 482bhp. They're fed from an 11kWh battery pack, for an estimated range of up to 379 miles between charges. Less powerful versions will arrive later, using the same 78kWh battery pack as the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/polestar/2/hatchback/review/n21641">Polestar 2</a>&nbsp;and providing a range of around 270 miles.

Inside, the '3' is minimalist in its design, with almost every function controlled through a 14.5in touchscreen.

Polestar 3 - Summer 2023

Porsche is best known as the quintessential sports car maker, but its line-up is increasingly diverse, interesting and successful, from its SUV family to the Panamera hatchback and shooting brake and, in time, a planned family of electric vehicles.

Whatever your choice, What Car?’s testers rate the cars highly; Porsche has an unusually high percentage of five and four-star cars.

Without exception, its sports cars are class leaders or among the class leaders, standing out for combining driving thrills with surprising luxury and comfort. Likewise, its SUVs are among the sharpest handling, as well as offering high levels of practicality and quality. Meanwhile, the Panamera is a true rival to the very best large executive saloons.

Porsche also sees itself as an electric car pioneer and has already enjoyed sales success with its plug-in hybrid range. Its first all-electric sports car is imminent, signalling the firm’s intent to stay relevant for many years to come.

PORSCHE

CAYENNE

We like the current <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/porsche/cayenne/estate/review/n17375">Porsche Cayenne</a> for its mix of family friendly practicality, luxurious interior and eye-widening performance, and in 2023 it's due for a series of mid-life updates.

Key among these will be small power hikes for much of the Cayenne's engine range, including the addition of fuel-saving mild-hybrid technology to help lower your running costs.

The Cayenne will get a bolder design&nbsp;too, with new bumpers and headlights, plus a new LED light bar at the rear. A fully digital driver's display will feature inside, alongside a larger infotainment screen.

Porsche Cayenne facelift - Summer 2023

The e-NY1 will be the Honda's first fully electric SUV, and is only one of a range of 30 new <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-electric-cars-2022/n17000">electric cars</a> the Japanese brand plans to build before 2030, when a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in the UK comes into force.

Essentially an electric version of the existing <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/honda/hr-v/hatchback/review/n102">Honda HR-V</a> family SUV, the e-NY1 will draw power from a 70kWh battery pack, giving it a range of around 300 miles between charges. Those figures place it in line with rivals including the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/id4/estate/review/n22789">VW ID.4</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volvo/xc40/estate/review/n22063">Volvo XC40 Recharge</a>.

The e-NY1 should offer comparable space to today's HR-V, meaning it should be a practical choice.

Honda e-NY1 - Summer 2023

Hyundai has transformed itself from a maker of oddball hatchbacks that sold in small numbers in the UK, to a major rival to the likes of Ford, Vauxhall and Volkswagen.

The Korean firm’s Ioniq Hybrid is particularly impressive, having beaten the trend-setting Toyota Prius when we tested the cars back to back.

Meanwhile, at the extremes of the Hyundai range you find the tiny i10 city car – a four-time What Car? award winner – and the stylish yet family-friendly Santa Fe SUV.

As a bonus, all of these cars come with the reassurance of a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty, whereas most of Hyundai’s rivals offer only three years and 60,000 miles of cover.

HYUNDAI

IONIQ 5

We've already been impressed by the standard <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/hyundai/ioniq-5/hatchback/review/n22944">Hyundai Ioniq 5</a>&nbsp;because of its spacious interior, super-fast charging speeds and other qualities. For 2023, Hyundai is adding a new range-topping N performance variant to the range, with beefier styling and lots more power than the standard car.

The Ioniq 5 N is based on the same underpinnings as the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/ev6/estate/review/n24838">Kia EV6 GT</a>&nbsp;and is expected to have up to 577bhp from its electric motors. It's likely to have the EV6 GT's 'drift mode', allowing buyers to execute controlled slides on track days.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N - Autumn 2023

The Ioniq 7 will, for the moment at least, be the largest and most expensive electric SUV <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/new-car-deals/make/hyundai">Hyundai</a> will make.

A sister model to the upcoming Kia EV9 and a rival to the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/ix/4x4/review/n23569">BMW iX</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/2023-volvo-ex90-electric-suv-revealed/n25153">Volvo EX90</a>, the Ioniq 7 is expected to offer a range of at least 300 miles between charges, and super-fast charging capabilities.

Eventually, the Ioniq 7 could serve as a replacement for today's <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/hyundai/santa-fe/4x4/review/n68">Hyundai Santa Fe </a>SUV, although that has yet to be confirmed.

Hyundai Ioniq 7 - Autumn 2023

The Grecale is a smaller and more affordable stablemate to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/maserati/levante/estate/review/n19462">Maserati Levante</a>&nbsp;– the Italian performance car brand's existing SUV. It will be a rival to&nbsp;sports SUVs including the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/alfa-romeo/stelvio/estate/review/n18177">Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/x3-m/4x4/review/n20299">BMW X3 M Competition</a>&nbsp;when it goes on sale in autumn 2023.

The Grecale's engine range will consist of two petrol engines with mild-hybrid technology from launch, and a&nbsp;full&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-electric-cars-2022/n17000">electric car</a> version will join the range a year after it goes on sale. That model should offer a range of at least 285 miles between charges.

Maserati Grecale - Autumn 2023

As far as famous siblings go, the upcoming Audi Q6 e-tron is doing pretty well. That's because it's the sister car to the forthcoming all-electric <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/porsche/macan/4x4/review/n52">Porsche Macan</a> EV, and as such carries as much hype with it as the launch of a new iPhone.

The Q6&nbsp;is about the same size as today's <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/q5/4x4/review/n41">Audi Q5</a> and will go head to head with a growing raft of electric SUV rivals. There will be multiple power outputs and battery sizes, with range-topping versions expected to get up to 590bhp and a range in excess of 300 miles between charges.

A second version of the Q6 e-tron with more of a coupé-SUV profile –&nbsp;likely to be called the Q6 e-tron Sportback –&nbsp;will arrive later.

Audi Q6 e-tron - Late 2023

While the current&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/x2/hatchback/review/n121">BMW X2</a> has a design that's a cross between a regular family car and an SUV, its replacement will have a coupé SUV profile that will mark it out as the smaller sibling of the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/x4/estate/review/n134">BMW X4</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/x6/4x4/review/n17306">BMW X6</a>.

For the first time, the petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid X2 will be joined by an&nbsp;electric iX2. That will use the same 64.7kWh (usable) battery as the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/ix1/estate/review/n25005">BMW iX1</a>&nbsp;and two electric motors for up to 309bhp. Expect a range of around 270 miles between charges.

BMW X2 / iX2 - Late 2023

First shown in concept car form in 2019, the Tavascan is Cupra's take on the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/id5/coupe/review/n24518">VW ID.5</a>. It will have&nbsp;dual electric motors&nbsp;producing&nbsp;302bhp&nbsp;and the 77kWh battery pack that powers the range-topping GTX version of the ID.5.

The Tavascan will join the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/cupra/born/hatchback/review/n23703">Cupra Born</a> electric hatchback&nbsp;and the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/2025-cupra-urbanrebel-revealed-price-specs-and-release-date/n24663">Cupra UrbanRrebel</a> small car in the Spanish brand's expanded electric line-up.

Cupra Tavascan - Late 2023

You might not be familiar with the Fisker name, but the company's boss, Henrik Fisker, is a big deal in the world of car design. His company's first SUV has more than just a bold look to captivate buyers, though.

Entry-level versions will be powered by a single 275bhp electric motor, giving the Ocean a range of up to 275 miles between charges. Mid-range versions get a second electric motor that boosts power to 540bhp, while range-topping Extreme models get 550bhp and can sprint from 0-62mph in just 3.6sec.

Other features include an infotainment screen that can rotate from portrait to landscape mode when the car is charging so buyers can watch a film in comfort. There will also be&nbsp;solar panels that are said to add up to 1500 miles of range a year in ideal conditions.

Fisker Ocean - Late 2023

The EV9 is Kia's equivalent of the Hyundai Ioniq 7, and like that model, it will be the largest and most luxurious <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-electric-suvs-2022/n23038">electric SUV</a> made by the South Korean brand.

Power is expected to come from a 100kWh battery pack, giving a range of at least 300 miles between charges. Inside, there's seating for up to seven people and a huge infotainment display that measures up to 27in across.

Prices should start from around £65,000, which would still let the EV9 undercut most <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-luxury-suvs-2022/n17036">luxury SUV</a> rivals.

Kia EV9 - Late 2023

According to the results of our most recent Reader Award poll, the Lotus Eletre is the electric car What Car? readers are most excited about seeing over the next year.&nbsp;

Priced from a heady £89,500, it's aimed squarely at the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/2023-audi-q8-e-tron-electric-suv-revealed/n25150">Audi Q8 e-tron</a> and the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/porsche/taycan/estate/review/n22960">Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo</a> 4S. The Eletre has more power than either of those rivals, with up to 595bhp available from its electric motors. As a result, it can reach 62mph in just 4.5sec.

All Eletres get the same 112kWh battery pack, which gives it an official range of up to 373 miles between charges.

Lotus Eletre - Late 2023

MACAN

Today's <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/porsche/macan/4x4/review/n52">Porsche Macan</a> is a four-star <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-sports-suvs-2022/n20200">sports SUV</a>&nbsp;offering rapid performance and a high-quality interior. This new version will aim to keep those attributes while moving from combustion to electric power.

Sharing many of its components with the upcoming Audi Q6 e-tron is expected to be available with up to 603bhp coming from dual electric motors, as well as a range of more than 300 miles between charges.

All versions are expected to get the same 100kWh battery pack, along with ultra-rapid charging capabilities.

Porsche Macan EV - Late 2023

The EX90 is, in effect, the electric replacement for today's <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volvo/xc90/4x4/review/n99">Volvo XC90</a> luxury SUV. It will be available with two electric motors and up to 510bhp when sales begin late next year, with energy coming from the same 111kWh battery pack that feeds the closely related Polestar 3 SUV.

That battery pack gives the EX90 an impressive range of up to 373 miles, and charging from 10-80% of capacity should take less than 30 minutes if you can find an ultra-rapid charging point.

Inside, you'll find seating for up to seven people, alongside a 15in central infotainment touchscreen running software designed by Google – meaning you get Google Maps navigation and hands-free help from Google Assistant.

Volvo EX90 - Late 2023

Prototype versions for the next <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/x3/4x4/review/n42">BMW X3</a> and its all-electric BMW iX3 stablemate have already been spotted testing in Germany. Although the camouflage on this test mule makes the details hard to make out, we're expecting to see a larger front grille, swooping headlights and a sharper rear light design than today's car.

The regular X3 will be offered with a range of petrol and diesel engines all featuring fuel-saving mild-hybrid technology, alongside at least one <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-plug-in-hybrid-cars-2022/n22743">plug-in hybrid</a> option.

The iX3 will get a single rear-mounted electric motor driving its rear wheels, fed from an 80.7kWh battery pack. That should give it a range of around 300 miles.

BMW X3/ iX3 - Early 2024

G CLASS

The EQG will aim to keep the go-anywhere ability of today's <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mercedes-benz/g-class/4x4/review/n180">Mercedes G-Class</a>&nbsp;while adding the green credentials of an electric SUV.

It will be the first model in the Mercedes&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-electric-cars-2022/n17000">electric car</a> range to use a new type of battery technology designed to give it an ultra-long range. There have been no details yet on how far it will allow the EQG to travel on a charge, its battery cells are said to be 40% more dense than those of a conventional electric car battery.

For buyers venturing off-road, the EQG will have bespoke software designed to replicate the feel of mechanical differential locks from each of the EQG's&nbsp;motors.

Mercedes EQG - 2024

Land Rover is synonymous with SUVs, and especially with the Defender – the rugged runabout that has seen service in war zones across the world, but also as part of the Queen’s personal garage.

If off-road prowess is one of Land Rover’s core values, though, the other is luxury. Indeed, the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Velar are among the best luxury SUVs you can buy.

The Discovery, meanwhile, is a practical rival for the Audi Q7 and BMW X5, while the stylish Evoque (which is available as a three-door convertible as well as a traditional SUV) goes head to head with Audi’s Q3 and BMW’s X1.

In the coming years, we’ll see a new road-biased ‘Road Rover’ as well as an all-new Defender.

LAND ROVER

RANGE ROVER

The latest <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/land-rover/range-rover/4x4/review/n17353">Range Rover</a> is the very definition of a luxury SUV, and you'll eventually be able to get an&nbsp;electric version too.

The Range Rover EV would act as a rival to other high-end <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-electric-suvs-2022/n23038">electric SUVs</a>, including the Audi Q8 e-tron and BMW iX, and while little is known about its battery or electric motors, it's safe to expect an official range of at least 300 miles between charges.

There'll be seating for up to seven people inside, alongside materials and technology that would help to justify the model's range-topping price tag.

Range Rover EV - 2024

An all-new <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/porsche/cayenne/estate/review/n17375">Porsche Cayenne</a> is coming in 2025, and with it will be a shift to electric power for Porsche's flagship SUV.

Making use of the same electric underpinnings as the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/porsche/macan/4x4/review/n52">Porsche Macan</a> EV we've already seen, the Cayenne is expected to use a 110kWh battery pack, giving it a range of around 350 miles between charges – that's in line with high-end versions of the rival BMW iX.

Interestingly, a four-door coupé version is expected to follow soon after the Cayenne EV goes on sale, in the same vein&nbsp;as today's <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/porsche/cayenne/coupe/review/n19924">Porsche Cayenne Coupé</a> SUV.

Porsche Cayenne EV - 2025

Think of the Skoda Vision 7S as being an all-electric replacement for today's <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/skoda/kodiaq/estate/review/n17362">Skoda Kodiaq</a>&nbsp;and you'll have a good idea of where this new SUV will sit in Skoda's line-up – the answer, of course, is right at the top.

As its name suggests, there will be seating for up to seven people, and while in concept form it was based around a 2+2+2 arrangement with a baby's car seat in the middle. The production car will get a more conventional 2+3+2 layout.

Energy for the 7S is fed from an 89kWh battery pack, while official figures suggest it should be possible to drive up to 370 miles between charges. You'll be able to choose between versions with single and dual electric motors, with up to 301bhp available.
