Fiat 500 Aria

It's billed firmly as a concept car, but expect at least some of the emissions-saving technology on the Fiat 500 Aria to make production as soon as this year.

The car is powered by a 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine that emits 98g/km of carbon dioxide. It uses a stop-start system and Fiat's new Dualogic semi-automatic gearbox to cut fuel consumption by 10% compared with the standard diesel 500.

Reduced weight, tyres with a low rolling resistance and efficient auxiliary functions all help towards reducing energy consumption as well.

Inside, the Aria features recycled materials, including a floor made from old tyres and seats trimmed in recycled and re-woven leather.

The stop-start system is a production certainty and the other features will almost definitely drip-feed into the product range.
