Ford started taking deposits for the 295bhp, front-wheel-drive car shortly before the British Motor Show in June, even though the car's specification still hasn't been finalised.

In total, 8000 RSs will be made, with 4000 going on sale in the UK meaning a quarter of the UK's allocation has already been sold.

The car is powered by a 2.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine generates and 302lb ft of pulling power, taking it from 0 to 60mph in under six seconds and on to a top speed of 155mph.

In total, 2200 examples of the previous-generation Focus RS were sold in the UK over a year raising the possibility that the latest version of the car could out-sell it before it has even entered showrooms.
