Ford Focus ST hatch and estate
* New 247bhp Focus ST revealed* Emissions and CO2 improved by more than 20%* On sale in 2012...
Ford has pulled the wraps off a new Focus ST hot hatch and a surprise Estate ST version, too.
On sale next year, the new car will be more powerful, yet more efficient, than the last Focus ST. Its powered by a 247bhp, 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed gearbox the previous car had a 2.5-litre five-cylinder unit.
Performance figures have yet to be revealed, but Ford says it is 20% more efficient than the last ST and it claims that that the new four-cylinder engine sounds as sporty as the five-pot one.
Ford is promising that the new Focus ST will have 'unprecedented driving dynamics'. The car features Ford's Sport Steering System, where the steering is less sensitive when driving on straight roads, but increases in sensitivity when cornering.
It also has a three-mode electronic stability programme that can alter the level of its intervention, including a setting that switches it off altogether.
Other features include Enhanced Torque Vectoring Control and Cornering Under Steer Control systems, which work together to reduce understeer, claims Ford.
The new Focus ST also gets uprated suspension, and a 10mm drop in ride height.
The styling remains similar to the Focus ST concept from the Paris motor show last year. The car gets a muscular look with its trapezoidal grille at the front, sporty sideskirts and a new rear bumper. There's also a roof spoiler to aid downforce and give a more aggressive look. The centre-exit exhaust completes the sporty theme.
The cabin has specially designed pedals, steering wheel and gearlever, and low-slung Recaro seats.
The Focus ST will have three trim options: ST1, ST2 and ST3.
ST1 has as cloth Recaro seats, keyless start and front door scuff plates with ST logo.
Focus ST2 gets part-leather Recaro seats and dual-zone climate control, ST floor mats, automatic headlights and wipers and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
The top-spec Focus ST3 gets heated leather Recaro seats with eight-way electrical adjustability and bi-xenon headlamps.
Prices have yet to be revealed.
