To cover all bases means to not miss anything out and prepare for every possibility – and that seems to be the approach Jaecoo is taking with most of its models, including the Jaecoo 5. Indeed, you can now have this small SUV with either petrol, electric or new hybrid power.

The hybrid 5 follows in the footsteps of the closely-related Omoda 5 and larger Jaecoo 7, which were both treated to new hybrid power earlier this year. As such, the 5 gets the same set-up as in those two cars, dubbed the ‘Super Hybrid System’. It consists of a 1.5-litre petrol engine, a small 1.83kWh battery and an electric motor for a combined output of 221bhp.

That makes the Jaecoo 5 more powerful than any version of the Toyota Yaris Cross and hybrid Renault Captur. With an official 0-62mph time of 7.9sec, the J5 is also brisker than most rivals, including non-ST versions of the sporty Ford Puma.

Jaecoo claims the 5 should be able to manage a combined range (using both the engine and battery) of more than 650 miles, with an official fuel economy of 53mpg. For reference, the hybrid Nissan Juke has an official figure of 60.1mpg, while the Yaris Cross quotes a maximum of 62.7mpg.

Inside, the hybrid 5 looks the same as other versions, with a 13.2in infotainment touchscreen, complete with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as an 8.8in driver’s display. With few physical buttons, most functions are controlled through the touchscreen.

Two trim levels will be available: Pure and Luxury. Equipment will mirror what’s already on offer in existing versions of the 5, which means air-con, manually adjustable front seats, a Sony audio system, front and rear parking sensors and voice control all come as standard.

Luxury trim adds some creature comforts like a panoramic roof, a 360-degree parking camera, electrically adjustable heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel and wireless phone charging.

The Jaecoo 5 hybrid will arrive in UK showrooms this autumn. Prices will start at £26,270, which is £1715 pricier than the petrol version, and £1235 cheaper than the EV. It’ll cost you less to buy than both the hybrid Nissan Juke and Toyota Yaris Cross.
