Think hybrids are too expensive? Well prepare to think again – because the KGM Torres has just received a new hybrid variant, and it’s even cheaper than its petrol counterpart.

Indeed, you can now have your Torres family SUV with full hybrid (FHEV) power. The new setup, which was developed in collaboration with Chinese manufacturer BYD, combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with two electric motors and a six-speed automatic gearbox. The result is a total output of 175bhp, making it more powerful than the new range-topping hybrid version of the Dacia Duster, but other rivals, like the Ford Kuga or Nissan X-Trail E-Power, offer more punch.

The Torres hybrid can apparently run in the city on its electric power for 95% of the time, at speeds of up to 62mph. A three-level regenerative braking system helps to charge the battery. The new model has an official fuel economy rate of 46.1mpg, though it’s unlikely you’ll achieve that figure in real-world driving, and it’s not quite as efficient as the Duster or Kuga FHEVs.

Nine driving modes will be available, including the EV mode mentioned above, HEV mode which combines both electric and petrol driving and engine drive mode to preserve the energy in the battery.

Inside, you get a panoramic widescreen display comprising a 12.3in digital instrument cluster and a 12.3in infotainment touchscreen, with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, a sat-nav and Bluetooth.

The Torres hybrid comes equipped exclusively with high-spec K40 trim, which includes 20in alloy wheels, heated and ventilated leather front seats with eight-way power adjustment and lumbar support, heated rear seats, dual-zone climate control, 32-colour ambient lighting and automatic emergency braking (AEB).

Boot space remains unchanged despite the new hybrid system, which is a good thing because the Torres benefits from a huge loading space of 703 litres – more room than any other model in its class.

The new KGM Torres hybrid will sit alongside the pure petrol version, which pumps out 161bhp from its 1.5-litre engine, and the all-electric EVX version, which puts out 204bhp. Prices for the hybrid will start at £35,995, making it the cheapest variant in the Torres lineup and undercutting the Kuga FHEV and X-Trail E-Power, but the new Duster hybrid is expected to be significantly cheaper.
