3. Mercedes-Benz SL 400 AMG Line Premium

The SL is a luxury grand tourer that excels at making long journeys down to the Riviera both exciting and comfortable. It's offered with a powerful range of engines and is relatively practical too, although its infotainment system is now looking rather dated.

2. Vauxhall Astra 1.0T Ecotec SRi

Target Price saving: 21.8%

The Astra undercuts the Volkswagen Golf by a big margin once discounts are taken into consideration, and it's competitive against the Ford Focus. This turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol engine is nicely flexible, while SRi models come with sports seats, a front armrest and 17in alloy wheels.
