The phrase ‘cheap and cheerful’ means something that’s inexpensive but still enjoyable, and it’s one that comes to mind at the mention of the new Chery Tiggo 7, which will aim to put buyers into a cheery mood with its keen pricing.

Indeed, Chinese car giant Chery, which owns the Omoda and Jaecoo brands, is set to launch in the UK as its own brand this year with two new models: the Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 SUVs.

The Tiggo 7 will be positioned as a rival to the keenly-priced Dacia Bigster, and it’ll be available with both petrol and plug-in hybrid power.

Powered by a 1.6-litre engine, the petrol version of the Tiggo 7 pumps out 145bhp – punchier than any mild hybrid version of the Bigster, but not quite as potent as the petrol MG HS.

Meanwhile, the plug-in hybrid option – dubbed Super Hybrid – combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and 18.3kWh battery, pumping out 202bhp. It’s the same system that can be found in the Jaecoo 7. That battery should be good for an official electric-only range of 56 miles, which isn’t as far as the 75 miles that the What Car? Award-winning MG HS PHEV can manage.

Inside, two 12.3in screens will display driver instruments and infotainment respectively, and they’ll be housed in one curved unit. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity come as standard, as well as adaptive cruise control, dual-zone air conditioning and a six-speaker Sony sound system when you opt for entry-level Aspire trim.

Stepping up to top-spec Summit trim gets you an additional two speakers for the sound system, and adds ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel and a powered tailgate.

The Chery Tiggo 7 is expected to land in the UK this summer, and prices will start at £24,995, with the PHEV starting at £29,995. That entry-level price significantly undercuts the Kia Sportage and Nissan Qashqai, as well as cheaper models like the Dacia Bigster and MG HS.
