New Vauxhall Mokka-e and Hyundai Kona Electric vs Volkswagen ID.3: verdict

Can Vauxhall’s striking new Mokka-e SUV beat the freshly facelifted Kona and class-leading ID.3 in this small electric car shootout?...

New Vauxhall Mokka-e and Hyundai Kona Electric vs Volkswagen ID.3 rears

Our verdict

There’s no doubt that the new Mokka is a big step forward compared with its predecessor. It’s fairly comfy and very quiet for a small electric car, plus it’s well equipped. But as an EV, it’s the weakest here, given that it has the shortest range and is the slowest and least fun to drive. Its high price and restricted interior space count against it, too.

The Kona isn’t particularly spacious, either, or even that comfortable, but it makes up for those shortcomings by being much cheaper than the Mokka, having a slightly better range and being better to drive. It also all but matches the Mokka for equipment, helping it to secure second place.

The ID.3 also has its issues – notably the distracting dashboard controls and poor infotainment system – but they’re outweighed by its many strengths. Given that it’s easily the quickest and best to drive of our trio and has the longest range, the roomiest interior and a top-notch safety rating, we think the ID.3 is still the best small EV you can buy
