Plug-in hybrid Volkswagen Polo confirmed
* Volkswagen confirms plug-in Polo * Comes with conventional engine and battery * Likely to be badged GTE...
The new Volkswagen Polo will come with a plug-in hybrid engine, the company has confirmed.
The hybrid is expected to use a petrol-electric powertrain and will launch in 2015. It is set to be VW's second plug-in hybrid after the Golf that is due at the end of 2014.
Although the prototype plug-in hybrid cars have been badged Twin Drive, it is rumoured that the Golf and Polo will both be called GTE.
The Golf plug-in hybrid combines a 148bhp 1.4-litre petrol engine and a 100bhp electric motor. Together, they offer official fuel economy of 188mpg with CO2 emissions of just 35g/km. The Polo's smaller size means it is likely to improve on this when launched.
VW has also confirmed that it will make a natural gas version of the Polo, but a lack of infrastructure means this will not come to the UK.
