29 August 2023 – Standing out in the crowd

If you want a car that attracts attention, you could buy a Lamborghini (if you have lots of money), or you could choose a Skoda Enyaq Coupé with Hyper Green paint. Subtle my car is not.

Even after six months of living with one, I sometimes still find myself being startled if I walk around a corner and suddenly spot my car when it’s parked up, because it looks so dramatic and stands out so much in the crowd.

To be clear, I have no problem with this; it’s kind of the raison d’etre of a car like the Enyaq Coupé. And as colleague James Tute pointed out when he borrowed my car recently, the dayglo paint probably offers safety benefits in grotty conditions. Driving around in it is like wearing an all-encompassing hi-vis vest, and that can be reassuring when visibility is poor.

That in itself is an incentive for me to keep my car clean – although I doubt I could accumulate enough grime in five years' worth of driving to make my car look any less conspicuous.
