The Volvo EX90 has received a major update to its hardware and software, which has added a host of safety features and faster charging through a new 800-volt system.
The update, which will be available on 2026 model year cars, adds an additional Nvidia computer processor to run the car’s software, which are typically used in some of the most powerful gaming PCs. This means that the car benefits from a number of new safety features, and should continue to benefit from over-the-air updates over time. Volvo plans to launch four major software updates per year.
The new features include stopping the car if the driver falls ill and fails to respond to warnings, steering the car away from oncoming collisions in the dark and parallel parking assist.
Owners of the existing EX90 will also be able to receive the safety upgrades by visiting a Volvo workshop for free.
These features were promised to early EX90 adopters when the car went on sale six months ago, but they were missing in the first delivered models due to “software issues”, which attracted some criticism.

Also new for 2026 is a new 800-volt charging architecture that replaces the outgoing 400-volt system. It matches the tech that’s available in the new ES90 saloon and will increase charging speeds in the EX90 from 250kW to 350kW. According to Volvo, topping up your battery with an additional 155 miles of range will take just 10 minutes. That will put the EX90 among some of the fastest-charging electric cars on the market – though it’s rare to find public chargers that will facilitate those speeds.
Volvo has also stated that the new 800V system allows for faster acceleration, though official figures haven’t been disclosed.
A new panoramic roof will also feature, and it’ll be electrochromic – meaning you can control the amount of light that it lets through. Indeed, it’s the same one that features on the ES90.
Pricing and technical details for the new Volvo EX90 have not yet been revealed, but we’d imagine the price will start slightly higher than the current £82,660 figure, at around £86,000. That’s still not as expensive as a Mercedes EQS, but the EX90 already costs considerably more than most rivals, including the BMW iX.
