Used BMW 5 Series Touring from under 7k
* E60 5 Series Touring '03-'11 * Smooth engines and practical cabin * Classy estate car that holds its value...

The BMW 5 Series Touring is one of our favourite used estate cars, in particular the E60 model that was on sale from 2003 to 2011. Prices have now fallen to less than 7000, which represents great value for money.
Buyers looking for a stylish estate that is also good to drive will not be disappointed with the 5 Series Touring. BMW has built a big car that handles well and comes with a range of strong, smooth engines.
Practicality is one of its strong points. All versions of the 5 Series Touring come with self-levelling rear suspension to help with handling when the car is fully laden a big, well-shaped boot and a roomy cabin.
All cars have air-conditioning, iDrive, folding rear seats, electric windows and alloy wheels.
BMW's iDrive system is something to watch out for when buying a used BMW 5 Series. The system is complicated to use, particularly on earlier cars, and is also one of the things that is most likely to go wrong. Check that all of its functions are working correctly before you commit.
The cabin is classy and well-built as you'd expect from a BMW. The rear will accommodate three passengers easily, while the front seats have plenty of room and adjustment. One niggle is that the rear seats don't fold completely flat when you want to expand luggage capacity.
Our pick of the range is the 525d SE for its blend of equipment, performance and price. The original 525d produced 163bhp, but that was upgraded to 177bhp in 2004. The 177bhp version does average economy of 40.4mpg.
We found this on the forecourt:

A variety of petrol and diesel engines are available, fitted to either the standard six-speed manual gearbox or an automatic.
Overall, the 5 Series Touring is a good-looking estate car that cruises well and has a practical and roomy cabin. There are cheaper estates out there but there are none as classy or good to drive.
