What Car? Personal Shopper: small car for £16,000

Dear What Car?,

I want to downsize my car, because I'm moving farther into the city, where parking is much tighter than where I currently live. I therefore need a small hatchback, but one with five doors and enough space for when I carry passengers. A petrol engine would be ideal – I usually only commute a short distance during the week – and low running costs would be a bonus. Can you help? I have around £16,000 to spend.
