Alternatives

What alternatives should I consider to a used Volkswagen T-Cross estate?

If you can do without the additional few centimetres of hight of the T-Cross' driving position, the Seat Arona makes for an excellent used small SUV. The boot is big by class standards and the Arona drives really well.

The Suzuki Vitara certainly has that SUV driving position that people are looking for, right down to the clamshell bonnet you have to look over that's a dead ringer for what you'd find in a Land Rover. Most engines provide lively performance and equipment levels are high, especially in SZ-T form.

On balance, your money is perhaps better spent on a Volkswagen T-Roc because its more refined and feels sharper to drive than the T-Cross, with less body lean in corners and a slicker feeling gear change.

Volkswagen T-Cross rear

Overview

The T-Cross is a spacious small SUV with a reasonably comfortable ride and, thanks to a sliding rear seat, a highly flexible one too. However, you will be able to find a good used example of the nicer to drive T-Roc for similar money. That car may not be quite as practical, but it beats the T-Cross in a sufficient number of areas to be our preferred choice.

  • Spacious, flexible interior
  • Impressive for safety
  • Good to drive
  • The older T-Roc is still a superior purchase
  • Interior is hardly plush
  • SEL and R-Line trims don't offer good value for money
