For
If you need something more practical than an executive saloon, then the Mercedes E-Class Estate is about as roomy as luxury cars get. It has loads of safety kit, plus a range of potent engines. This strong and smooth six-cylinder E350 diesel is our favourite, because it delivers the refinement you’d expect at this price.

Against
Some of the interior plastics disappoint, and the seven-speed automatic gearbox isn’t as quick or smooth as we’d like. It’s also not as clean as some rivals, either, so tax and fuel fill-ups will cost more.

Should I add any options?
Class-leading standard equipment means there’s nothing missing in this top-spec trim. Sat-nav, climate control, heated and electrically adjustable seats and a powered tailgate are all included. The only option we’d suggest is the excellent full air suspension. At £1055 it’s a pricey addition, but worth considering given the huge saving.
