What if our faulty car isn’t fixed before the warranty expires?
Reader is concerned that if his wife's car's warranty expires before a fault is fixed he will have to pay for the repairs...
My wife’s Volkswagen Tiguan has some ongoing problems that my Volkswagen dealer has not yet been able to rectify and is saying they need more time to find a solution to them.
However, the car is approaching three years old and its warranty is due to expire soon, so I’m worried that the car will not be fixed before it runs out. What are my rights regarding getting the faults sorted out for free under warranty and what can I realistically expect the dealer to do?

All Volkswagen cars have a manufacturer’s warranty of three years or 60,000 miles – whichever elapses first – to cover manufacturing and design faults. However, these warranties don’t cover every component on your car – wear and tear items, such as tyres, won’t be covered, and many don’t cover the cost of repairing infotainment screens if they’re scratched or damaged. So the first thing we’d recommend is that you check the terms and conditions of your car’s warranty to see if the fault is covered by it.
Provided it is covered, we’d recommend that you contact Volkswagen’s customer service department and get the fault logged with them; they will keep written logs of all calls, but you can make doubly sure they have a record of the problem by emailing them information about the symptoms you've experienced, when they first started and what has been done so far to try to fix it.
This will ensure that it will be fixed for free under warranty, even if the remedial work isn’t completed until after the warranty has expired.
It’s worth updating customer services if you hear about any delay on the work being done so they have an up-to-date picture of what’s going on.
