Four engines are offered, starting with a 74bhp 1.4 which is capable of keeping up with family hatchbacks, then moving up to a peppy 16 1.6 to pick up momentum or with heavy loads. The 71bhp 1.9 D is economical but slow, but Citroën's 2.0-litre HDi turbodiesel delivers both plenty of punch and good fuel economy.
Citroën BERLINGO MULTISPACE MPV ride & handling
Citroën's oddball MPV certainly doesn't handle like the builder's transport it resembles. Its is sure-footed and entertaining. but as you might expect, the tall body does lean a little in corners. Progress is made easier by power steering and excellent all-round visibility.
Citroën BERLINGO MULTISPACE MPV refinement
All engines are reasonably smooth and refined, although the 1.4-and the diesel models need a fair amount of right foot to keep up with traffic or to overtake, and make their presence heard as the revs rise. Some wind noise disturbs the peace at higher speeds, particularly if the full-length electric sunroof has been fitted.
