Cost & verdict

Everyday costs, plus how reliable and safe it is

Price wise, the car massively undercuts all of its MPV rivals by a sizeable margin, whether you’re buying in cash or on a PCP finance deal.

Fuel economy is highly competitive against its rivals, too; the 74bhp diesel has an official figure of 68.9mpg, while the 99bhp and 128bhp versions both average 65.7mpg, with the petrol claiming 51.4mpg.

Insurance cost of the previous Berlingo Multispace was reasonable, so the new model isn’t expected to change. In fact, it might even improve, since the new car comes with a suite of safety technology as standard, including automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning.

Standard equipment is good, even if entry-level Feel trim comes without alloy wheels. You still get air-con, an 8.0in infotainment system that includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink, cruise control and automatic lights and wipers.

Citroën as a brand managed only 25th place out of 31 car manufacturers in the What Car? 2018 reliability survey, though. All new Berlingos do get a three-year, 60,000-mile warranty – but, while that is helpful, it’s not especially impressive compared with other rivals in the class.
