Audi: Different cars, same engine

Audis 496bhp 6.0-litre diesel engine has found a home in an Audi R8 paying homage to the companys Le Mans success.

The unit gives the supercar a 0-62mph time of 4.2s and a top speed rated only as in excess of 300kph (186mph). Thanks to 738lb ft of pulling power from the diesel engine, peak power is available from 1750rpm.

The R8s bodywork has been stretched in places, with the wheel arches being flared and the air inlets extended. Twin rear diffusers, a rear spoiler that moves according to the cars speed and restyled aerodynamics mean the car generates downforce, increasing grip.

Emphasising the racing theme, the sat-nav changes into a lap timer and track map if the Race mode is selected. Other detailed changes include additional aluminium trims on the interior, again to give the car a sporty feel.

The Audi R8 TDI Le Mans is being described as a design study for now, but many expect it to be produced as a limited edition.

Audi Q7 V12 TDI

It's the Audi Q7, but on a whole new level, because this one is powered by a 496bhp 6.0-litre diesel engine with 758lb foot of pulling power.

The engine is the world's first diesel V12. It manages 19.77mpg and propels the car from 0-62mph in 5.5s. Top speed is restricted to 155mph.

Performance enhancements include carbonfibre ceramic brakes, air suspension and 20-inch wheels.

Styling features include LED lights, sill inserts and additional carpet.

A DVD sat-nav, Bose CD player, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and alarm system all come as standard. Adaptive cruise control, side and lane assist and camera-aided parking are all available as options.

The car will go on sale later this year.
