Besides the small matter of the new 5 Series, BMW is unveiling a raft of engine changes affecting the 1- and 3 Series, as well as the X5 and X6. There are also significant developments for the M3.

The coupe and convertible version of the 1 and 3 Series now get the latest version of BMW's twin-turbo 3.0-litre straight six engine. There's also a double-clutch seven-speed semi-auto gearbox option with the two top-of-the-range 1 Series cars.

The updated twin-turbo petrol engine is also to be found in the X5 and X6, along with a couple of new 3.0-litre diesels one badged 30d and delivering 242bhp and the other badged 40d with 302bhp. Again, there are all-round improvements in efficiency, with fuel consumption improved by up to 10% despite the power gains.

There are changes to the four- and six-cylinder diesels in the 320d and 325d coup and convertible, too, improving performance while maintaining or lowering fuel consumption and emissions. The styling of both has been refreshed.

The X5 also has an improved iDrive central control system, and is available with surround view and side view cameras as options.

All the revised models will be in showrooms between April and May.

May is also the on-sale date for the revised M3 range, which become the first cars with engines of more than four-cylinders to feature an engine stop-start system. This is fitted to both manual and semi-automatic versions, and it brings down average fuel consumption by around 8%.

An optional competition package for the M3 coup and saloon will become available at the same time, comprising a 10mm reduction in ride height, 19-inch wheels and a sportier setting for the electronic dampers and stability control.
