BMW Vision ConnectedDrive

BMW has just unveiled its wacky Vision ConnectedDrive two-seater concept car here in Geneva.

The sporty roadster is packed with technology designed to enhance the comfort and safety of occupants as well as improve their access to information.

Its designed to showcase how a car can be a fully integrated part of the networked world in which we live. For example, sensors and cameras scan the surrounding environment in front of and behind the vehicle and send relevant information to the driver via a head-up display and a more detailed instrument panel.

The head-up display features augmented reality technology to directly overlay navigation information and directions over the driver's real-world view.

The Vision ConnectedDrive also gathers, sends and receives information on traffic levels around the vehicle. Many third-party companies are working on intelligent transport systems in which this kind of information could be collected and analysed by a remote hub, which would then manage traffic to improve journey times.

The Vision ConnectedDrive follows on from the Vision Efficient Dynamics concept car of 2009, and gives a flavour of what next-generation BMW styling might look like. BMW says the car's set back seating position, long bonnet and distinctive flowing lines make it appear as if it is accelerating even when its standing still.

The vertically sliding doors inspired by those on the BMW Z1 of 20 years ago disappear into the body of the car, which allows the Vision ConnectedDrive to be driven with the doors open.
