24 May 2026 – Rear of the year?

I need my Citroën C3 Aircross to do a lot of things. I need it to be fuel efficient for my high-mileage journeys around the country, comfortable on the motorway and, most importantly, I need it to be spacious with plenty of storage options.

In short, I ask a lot of it. I even upgraded to the seven-seat option, so that I can ferry around our What Car? presenters and crew if needed, as well as friends and family at the weekends. This does come at a cost, though, because doing so meant I lost 30 litres of valuable boot space.

In total, my car has 300 litres of boot space available when the third row seats are laid flat. That gives me enough room to fit the majority of my camera gear in, along with an overnight bag, as long as I’m clever with my packing and remember my years of playing Tetris growing up.

In fact, on a recent filming trip I managed to get two lots of camera kit, a couple of small day bags, and three crew members inside the C3 Aircross. However, we did have to put a couple of overnight bags into the test cars we were filming due to the lack of remaining space in the rear. That was a touch disappointing, but then again it was a very big kit list and us videographer's aren't known for packing lightly.

When I'm not carrying passengers, I can fold the third and second rows away to liberate more room, and in this form the C3 Aircross gives a whopping 1470 litres of space, meaning I can easily fit longer items inside. On a recent trip I even managed to fit in a dining table, kindly donated by my Auntie, with no trouble at all. I was pleased to find that this was easy to get in through the boot entrance, too.

If I do want to carry six passengers, the boot space is reduced to being basically non-existent, with only 40 litres behind the third-row seats. That's enough for a couple of small soft bags but not for a weekend away with the lads.

My passengers are well catered for with storage, with a large glove box, door bins which are large enough to take a couple of water bottles, a little storage tray for any loose change, and two cup holders which are perfect for storing one of a videographer's most crucial pieces of equipment – coffee.

So far, then, the C3 Aircross boot has done the job I’ve asked of it. Whilst I could do with a bit more space to fit in extra bags on longer filming trips, I haven’t been disappointed with how the boot has coped with my demands, and that's endearing this small SUV to me immensely.
