Deal of the Day: Lease a BYD Sealion 5 from £228 per month

The BYD Sealion 5 is a keenly priced plug-in hybrid family SUV – even more so when you take into account our leasing deals...

BYD has recorded impressive growth since it launched in the UK in 2023, and it could put its successes down to its models’ good practicality, long list of equipment and – perhaps most importantly – affordable pricing. The BYD Sealion 5 is no different; it’s bigger than a Hyundai Tucson, but costs even less.

So, the Sealion 5 is already keenly priced – but what about when you factor in our leasing deals? Well, you might be pleased to know that you could put a brand new one on your driveway for as little as £228 per month.

To do that, you’ll need to opt for a 36-month contract with an annual mileage limit of 5000 miles, and an initial payment of £2730.62. The annual 5000 mile restriction isn’t a huge allowance, so you’ll have to be careful to avoid excess mileage charges.

If you regularly cover more miles, you could opt for a more common 36-month, 10,000-mile agreement with six months initial rental (£1739.10), which will cost £289.85 per month.

The Sealion 5 is available exclusively as a plug-in hybrid, featuring a 1.5-litre petrol engine alongside small battery and electric motor with a total output of 209bhp. Our Deal of the Day comes in entry-level Comfort trim, which is actually the fastest of the two options, completing a 0-62mph sprint in 7.7sec. That’s slower than the Ford Kuga PHEV, but quicker than the Tucson, and it’s more than fast enough for everyday driving.

While Comfort versions have extra speed, they are equipped with a smaller 13kWh battery (compared with 18kWh in other versions), meaning they have a rather short 35-mile official electric range. That’s less than the Kuga (35 miles) and some way off the MG HS PHEV, which can manage up to 75 miles.

BYD Sealion 5 interior

Like most other plug-in hybrids, the Sealion 5’s suspension is pretty firm, so that means it’s well-controlled over bumpy roads, preventing you from swaying side-to-side. On the other hand, it does also mean that the Sealion 5 feels quite fidgety most of the time, and it’s not quite as smooth as the Tucson.

The Sealion 5 is very keenly priced, but you wouldn’t be able to tell from the plush materials used inside. All versions come with vegan leather seats as standard, and there are soft-touch plastics in all the important places. It also has a nice lofty driving position, which allows you a good view of the road ahead.

Elsewhere inside, there’s an 8.8in driver’s display alongside a 12.8in infotainment touchscreen. It has crisp graphics and straightforward menus, which are helpful because there aren’t many physical controls. Each version of the Sealion 5 also gets plenty of kit, including sat-nav and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring.

As you might expect from a family SUV, the Sealion 5 doesn’t scrimp on interior space. Even broad six-footers won’t have issues stretching out both in the front and rear. With 463 litres of boot space, the Sealion 5 is more practical than a Ford Kuga, but not quite as spacious as an MG HS PHEV or Tucson PHEV.

Even though our Deal of the Day comes in entry-level Comfort trim, it’s very well-equipped, with 18in alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, keyless entry and start and electrically folding and heated door mirrors.
