The Renault Kadjar is small SUV that's a great option if you’re looking for a spacious family car. It’s a good value proposition even before taking into account this £2000 saving off the list price.

For

There’s a lot to like about the Renault Kadjar. It shares a lot of its parts with the class-leading Nissan Qashqai, and it actually beats the Nissan in terms of emissions and value for money.

The Kadjar is a very capable family car. Inside, there’s plenty of room for passengers and their luggage and there’s a generous standard specification, particularly on this Signature Nav model. It also benefits from the high driving position that’s popular with SUV buyers.

Rear-seat space is generous - two tall adults will have no difficulty getting comfortable - and the boot is the biggest in the class.

The Kadjar is a comfortable cruiser and the 1.2-litre petrol engine fitted to this model is quiet even when worked hard.

Against

Renault isn’t known for its quality materials and that's evident in some of the plastics used in and around the cabin.

The 1.2-litre petrol engine is quiet, but it needs to be worked hard to keep up with faster moving traffic. It’s fine for pottering around town and the occasional trip on the motorway, but if you spend more time on faster roads you’ll be better off going for one of the diesel-powered models.

The boot is a very good size and there’s lots of room in the rear seats, but the Kadjar misses out on some of the features that improve practicality such as sliding rear seats and a powered tailgate. This Signature Nav-trim model does come with a feature that allows you to drop the rear seat backs by pulling a lever in the boot, though.

Should I add any options?

Signature Nav comes with alloy wheels, LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, front and rear parking sensors, cruise control, a Bose sound system, climate control and sat-nav. Metallic paint is a £525 option.

What are its rivals?

The Kadjar’s biggest rival is the car with which it shares a lot of its parts, the Nissan Qashqai. It gives it a good run for its money, but the Nissan is still our favourite small SUV. That said, don’t immediately dismiss the Renault: it’s still a great car for families and it offers very good value for money.

Other rivals include the Ford Kuga, Skoda Yeti and Kia Sportage.
