6 July – Off to the coast for some Capri sun

What better test of a new car than to load it up with enough luggage for a family of four and then subject it to a two-hour drive to the coast for a quick half-term holiday?

Indeed, after my Ford Capri arrived, there was barely enough time to adjust the driver’s seat and mirrors before we were off from Surrey to Dorset, on a 97-mile mixture of motorways and A-roads with the car at more or less full capacity.

I’m pleased to say the space test was passed with flying colours – if there’s one thing this Capri is, it’s spacious. For starters, the boot is huge. At 572 litres, it’s bigger than rivals like the Cupra Tavascan, Kia EV6 and Volkswagen ID 5, and it easily swallowed two good-sized suitcases and all our excess baggage; we Pearsons don’t travel lightly.

Inside, we all had enough leg and head room, because there's plenty of space behind a six-foot driver for a leggy passenger. What’s more, no one complained in the course of the journey there (and back) of any discomfort in the seating or the quality of the ride. Instead, what was commented on was the usefulness of having a completely flat floor in the rear, with no nasty transmission tunnel to straddle.

The journey itself was a mixture of free-flowing and stuck-fast traffic. Checking the Capri’s digital readout on arrival at our hotel, I was pleased to discover it had achieved a respectable 3.5 miles per kWh, which, considering the time spent crawling and the time spent at motorway speeds and the fact we were loaded up, wasn’t bad. It would equate to a range of 277 miles. And, as if to prove this wasn’t a fluke, it did more or less the same on the return journey.

Complaints? Well, it rained on the day of our departure, and I’m still not convinced by manufacturers (like Ford) who say their cars of this shape don’t need a rear windscreen wiper. Yes, there is a very useful 360deg rear-view camera to help when parking, but there are times when it would be better to have a clearer view out of the rear-view mirror.
