25 August 2025 – Time and space, and kilowatt hours
Touchscreens in cars are a sensitive modern issue, due to the driver distraction they can cause, but I reckon the one in my Ford Capri is cleverer than most.
It’s a 14.9in, portrait-orientated unit and, as in the closely related Ford Explorer, it features Ford’s new Sync Move feature, which allows you to adjust the screen vertically in a 30-degree arc. That allows you to bring the top or bottom of it closer to you or reduce glare, and also covers up a central cubby to keep any valuables out of sight.

In addition, the icon for adjusting the air temperature is right by my left knee, so it’s always easy to locate and doesn’t require me to take my eyes off the road for too long. As for the other icons, I’m finding it’s a bit like playing an odd version of that card game Pelmanism, remembering where they are and trying to prod them without looking.
In other news, a regular trip my family and I do from Surrey to Kent showed the difference that can be achieved in the efficiency of my Capri, depending on the traffic encountered en route.
On the outbound journey, we were stuck in predictable Friday afternoon tailbacks on the M25 for much of the way, such that my average speed for the 58-mile journey was only 34mph. The car’s efficiency, however, was an excellent 4.4 miles per kilowatt hour of energy used – the highest figure I’ve yet achieved and one that equates to a potential range of 339 miles.

The return journey was made via a faster, slightly shorter and less trafficky section of the A2 and M25, so we were more often able to travel at the motorway speed limit. The journey was quicker, then, but the efficiency dropped to just 3.5 miles/kWh (or just 270 miles of potential range). You pays your money and takes your choice, I guess.
These trips were both done four up, with one of my daughters sitting behind me. Yet even though I’m six feet tall, she was perfectly comfortable. Indeed, I’ve found I can sit behind my own driving position without feeling tight for leg room. True, my head brushes the ceiling due to the Capri’s plunging rear roofline, but my daughter didn’t have that issue.
