16 September 2025 – Hot under the collar

While I can’t be completely sure that the fault doesn’t lie with me, and that I’m not suffering some disastrous side effect of the male menopause, during the recent summer of unfeasibly hot weather, it seemed to take a heck of a time for the scorching hot interior of my Ford Capri to cool down.

The problem seemed to be that it didn’t pump out as much cool air as quickly through the vents as one or two other cars I’d driven around the same time. There is an icon for putting the AC up to the max, and I’ve always used that, but the cooling air comes through the face-level vents only, and those vents don’t seem as generously sized as some.

Of course, Ford provides preconditioning for the Capri, so if you press the right icon or download the Ford app, you can set the temperature in advance to cool the car before you get in it. Alas, being a technophobe, I haven’t even got as far as downloading the app; I guess for most, though, that is the easy solution.

So while I can blame my age and indolence for that issue, there’s no getting away from the fact that the following week the Capri was most definitely at fault. Hopping into it one afternoon, I was met with a warning sign on the dashboard and on the touchscreen advising me of a 12V error. The car, though technically on, couldn’t be put into gear, so driving it was out of the question. I put in a call to Ford Assist and arranged for an AA man to come over the next day.

Alas, he couldn’t fix the issue, which he said was that the Capri’s main big battery, the one that drives the car, wasn’t charging up the smaller 12V battery, the one that starts the car.

That meant I had to wait two more days for the Capri to be towed to my nearest Ford dealer, TrustFord at Byfleet, for a new 12V battery. Two further days later, I picked it up and all is well, so far, but had I been going anywhere other than the supermarket when the Capri failed to start, I would have been annoyed that my six-month-old car with barely 4000 miles on the clock had effectively left me stranded.
