The Ford Focus Electric is available to order now, with prices starting at Β£28,500.

The Focus will come with a 140bhp electric motor that is powered by a lithium ion battery that should be good for a range of 100 miles. It can be recharged either through a standard three-pin plug, which takes 10-11 hours, or a 32A dedicated fast charger, which takes between three and four hours.

It will be priced at Β£33,500, but will qualify for the Government's Β£5000 Plug-in car grant. This makes the Focus significantly more than its closest rivals, the likes of the Nissan Leaf, which starts at Β£15,990 after the grant.

Electric Focuses are likely to remain rare; Ford expects to sell just 30 in its first year.
