In a policy document entitled Way to Go, Johnson outlined his plans to improve transport systems in and around London. While he put an emphasis on improving public transport and cycling schemes, he also vowed to help motorists who have no alternative but to drive.

He pledged 'a fair approach to all road users, including an end to the punishment of motorists when they have no alternative to the car.'

Initiatives include smoothing traffic flow through the re-phasing of traffic lights, opening bus lanes to motorbikes, and 'declaring war on roadworks'
