New Chery Tiggo 9 revealed as seven-seat plug-in hybrid SUV with 91-mile electric range
Chery’s third model to land in the UK will be the Tiggo 9 seven-seat PHEV, and it’ll offer an industry-leading electric range...

Chery only entered the UK car market this year, but it has got to work very quickly, with three cars already launched and another in the pipeline for the coming months. The latest model to be launched is the new Chery Tiggo 9 seven-seater, which will aim to deliver affordable luxury at a tempting price compared with its main rivals.
Closely related to the upcoming Jaecoo 8, the new Tiggo 9 will receive an iteration of Chery’s ‘Super Hybrid’ plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system, combining a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 34.36kWh battery and two electric motors. Those motors will pump out a hefty 422bhp and will allow the Tiggo 9 to sprint from 0-62mph in 5.4sec, equalling the Volvo XC90 PHEV.

That big battery can officially facilitate up to 91 miles of all-electric driving, which is more than double the XC90’s 44 miles and beats the Volkswagen Golf eHybrid’s 88 miles – which means the Tiggo 9 will be the PHEV with the longest range on sale based on WLTP figures. Of course, it’s unlikely you’ll manage the full 91 miles in real-world driving, but it’s still an impressive figure.
With public charging speeds of up to 71kW, a 30-80% top-up of the battery should take 18 minutes. The Tiggo 9 also supports vehicle-to-load (V2L) charging, which allows you to power external devices, such as laptops or camping equipment, with the battery.

Inside, the Tiggo 9 will have three rows of seats, with space for up to seven occupants. There’s a 15.6in infotainment touchscreen alongside a 10.25in digital display and a head-up display. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come as standard, as well as wireless phone charging and a 14-speaker Sony sound system.
With the third row of seats folded down, the Tiggo 9 has 819 litres of boot space – more than what you get in PHEV versions of the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento. However, the XC90 is more practical.

Just one trim level is available with the Tiggo 9: Summit, which is the range-topping trim on other Chery cars including the Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8. It includes 20in alloy wheels, heated and ventilated front and rear seats, massaging front seats, a 12-way adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support, dual-zone climate control, a heated steering wheel, ambient lighting, a 540-degree parking camera system, a panoramic sunroof, a powered tailgate and a dedicated Pet Mode for keeping furry friends cool if they’re left briefly inside.
The Chery Tiggo 9 is due to arrive in showrooms in December. Prices will start at £43,105, undercutting PHEV rivals like the Kia Sorento and Volkswagen Tayron.
The Tiggo 9 is due to be followed by the arrival of the Tiggo 4 – a small SUV to rival the likes of the Skoda Kamiq and Volkswagen T-Roc – early next year.
