It's hard to keep track of the growing number of brand new Chinese models sweeping the automotive market nowadays — and now there’s one (potentially two) more to add to the confusion: the Jaecoo 5.

You might have heard of Jaecoo when it launched its Jaecoo 7 family SUV at the start of this year. Sales of that car have already been impressively successful, so the new 5 will have a lot to live up to.

The Jaecoo 5 will initially be available exclusively with a turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine when it lands in the UK. It'll produce 145bhp, which is less than the 183bhp power output of its sister car, the Omoda 5. That makes it punchier than petrol-engined versions Nissan Qashqai, but less powerful than the Kia Sportage and MG HS. The Jaecoo's engine will be paired with a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox – there’s no manual gearbox option.

There's also a fully electric version of the Jaecoo 5, called the Jaecoo E5, which will go on sale in October as well. That model is powered by a 61.1kWh battery for an official range of 248 miles, and it gets a 204bhp electric motor driving the front wheels. Priced from £27,505, it undercuts most other small electric SUV rivals.

Outside, the Jaecoo 5 looks essentially like a Jaecoo 7 that’s shrunk in the wash, with the same aggressively-styled front end, boxy silhouette and slightly sloping roofline. It is shorter, though, and has a different headlight design.

Inside the 5, there’s a 13in vertical infotainment touchscreen, as well as driver’s display embedded into the dashboard behind the steering wheel – a stark difference to the floating display in the 7.

Two trim levels will be available: Pure and Luxury. Entry-level Pure trim comes equipped with automatic halogen headlights, a six-speaker Sony sound system, level 2 autonomous driving aids, six-way adjustable seats and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration.

Stepping up to Luxury trim will get you a panoramic roof, an eight-speaker Sony sound system, a 540deg panoramic camera and wireless phone charging. The front seats are six-way power adjustable, heated and ventilated.

Optional extras include a karaoke mode, for singalongs on the go, pet mode to keep dogs cool and safe when the car is parked and a camping mode that enables music to be played without draining the car's 12-volt battery.

With 1180 litres of boot space when you fold down the rear seats, the Jaecoo 5 is less practical than most rivals, including the Sportage, HS and Qashqai.

Every Jaecoo 5 will come with a 7-year/100,000-mile warranty, which is up there with some of the best warranties offered by manufacturers.

The Jaecoo 5 will go on sale in October, with prices starting at £24,505. That significantly undercuts the Kia Sportage, but the MG HS is in the same ballpark.
