The all-new Mercedes-AMG C63 has made its global debut at the Paris motor show. This BMW M3 rival, which sits atop of the recently launched C-Class range, will come in saloon and estate body styles, with a choice of C63 or C63 S variants.
With ever more pressure on manufacturers to lower emissions and improve economy, Mercedes has chosen to replace the previous C63’s 6.3-litre normally aspirated engine with a new 4.0-litre V8 biturbo petrol. It claims this change offers increased performance combined with a 32% reduction in fuel consumption – the standard C63 averages up to 33.6mpg with CO2 emissions of 192g/km.
In standard guise, the C63 has 469bhp and 479lb ft of torque, which in the saloon translates to a 0-62mph time of 4.1sec, while for the estate, this rises to 4.2sec. Customers who choose the C63 S will benefit from a boost in performance with peak power rising to 503bhp and 516lb ft of torque. This drops the 0-62mph figures by 0.1sec for both bodystyles. For all variants, the maximum speed is capped at 155mph.
The transmission on offer is a seven-speed dual-clutch auto, equipped with steering wheel-mounted paddles to allow a manual override. This sends drive through a limited-slip differential – mechanical in the standard car or electronically controlled in the S.
Both models come with a feature called AMG Dynamic Select, which allows owners to alter the cars character between a comfort and more sporting bias. This is achieved by selecting from a number of presets, which vary the gearbox change speed, stability control, exhaust note, steering weight, as well as the ride and handling balance via the car’s electronic dampers.
Externally the AMG version is differentiated from other C-Class models’ by dint of its flared front wings, two bonnet ‘power’ bulges, a new grille and a restyled front bumper incorporating larger cooling vents. Sill extensions continue the sporting look along the sides, while at the rear there are two twin-exhaust tailpipes, a rear diffuser incorporated in to the rear bumper and a rear spoiler. Alloy wheels of either 18-inches on the C63 or 19-inches on the C63 S are fitted over larger steel brake discs, with ceramic versions available as an option.
Inside the performance theme continues with the dashboard and sports seats trimmed in man-made leather that’s enhanced with contrasting grey stitching. The dials have been given a carbonfibre effect and there is also a sports steering wheel. Performance seats, which sit the driver lower and offer more side support, are an option, as is an IWC-designed clock, a head-up display and a 360-degree camera.
Customers can upgrade to an Edition 1 package for an extra charge. This offers styling and equipment enhancements that include unique 19-inch alloy wheels finished in black with a red rim. This colour scheme continues to a number of exterior fittings like the front grille, exhaust tailpipes and sill extensions, as well as into the cabin, which comes with black nappa leather seats with contrasting red stitching and red seatbelts.
The Mercedes-AMG C63 and C63 S saloon will be available in the UK from February 2015, while the estate version will arrive the following April.
