So what's Nissan doing about it?
It will have a full range of EVs on sale by around 2015, meeting the same customer requirements as petrol and diesel cars, and offering the same levels of occupant protection.

Its strategy goes beyond merely making and selling cars, though. Nissan is working with Clarion on sat-nav systems that show recharging points, and technology that can alert you via your mobile phone if the battery charge is getting low while you are away from the car.

Nissan is also talking to governments and other parties about offering financial incentives and expanding the infrastructure to support widespread EV use.
