Tougher sentences for dangerous drivers

Drivers who seriously injure people could face tougher prison sentences under plans revealed today.

A new offence of causing serious injury by dangerous driving will carry a maximum sentence of five years up from the current two-year limit for dangerous driving.

However, those who kill while driving can face up to 14 years in prison.

The proposed new offence is designed to fill the gap between the two existing charges.

Justice secretary Kenneth Clarke said: 'We have listened to the victims of dangerous drivers, their families, MPs, judges and road safety groups and their experiences have directly informed these changes.'
