Toyota GT 86

Toyota seems rightly proud of its GT 86 coupe, which is getting its first public airing at the Tokyo motor show.

advertisment

The Toyota GT 86 has a 2+2 seat layout. It is powered by a 197bhp 2.0-litre, four-cylinder boxer engine. The rear-wheel-drive car will come with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed auto.

The car, first revealed as the FT 86 concept car at the Tokyo motor show two years ago, has been co-developed with Subaru, which has called its version the BRZ. Toyota says it expects to outsell the BRZ by a ratio of five to one. The car probably won't be sold at every Toyota dealership.

Toyota says it has done its own benchmarking against the Peugeot RCZ, Volkswagen Scirocco and hot hatches and it believes the GT 86 outperforms these rivals in tests around the Nurburgring race track.

Prices have yet to be revealed, but the GT 86 is expected to cost from around 25,000.
