Our verdict
Fast, fun and refined, the Porsche Macan is astonishing, but a BMW M3 beater it is not. As much as the Macan hides its SUV height and weight on the road, take it out of isolation and pit it against an M3 and a spotlight is shone on its bulk. The M3 is a much sharper and livelier machine.
It's also cheaper to buy and run, plus it's better equipped, so the M3 proves the better used buy, as well as the more rewarding driver's car.
Within their respective classes, these two cars are equally esteemed, we should add. As such, we wouldn't blame you if you bought either, depending on your needs, and they earn the same star rating from us.
