What Car? Personal Shopper: best small SUV for less than £17,000
Buying used
- Our recommended choice: 2016 Skoda Yeti Outdoor 1.2 TSI SE L DSG
- Price: £14,725
- Mileage: 9784
Skoda no longer makes the Yeti, which is why you have to buy one used. And you should, because despite its age, it’s a great little car that combines immense practicality and versatility with a compact footprint and fun driving dynamics.
Even better, you don’t need to spend £17,000 to get one. In fact, you probably shouldn’t – given the age of the Yeti’s basic design. Better to spend £14-15,000, in fact, and have some change left over for a few years’ extended warranty.
£14,725, for example, buys you this cracking 1.2 TSI SE L. With a perky petrol turbo engine, it’s ideally suited to short trips around town, and being the high-spec SE L version it gets leather seats – heated in the front for those cold mornings – as well as dual-zone climate control, sat nav, Bluetooth connectivity and Xenon headlamps. This 2016 example has covered just 9800 miles, too, so it’ll barely feel used.

Also consider: 2017 Audi Q2 1.6 TDI SE Price: £16,898 Mileage: 26,635
The Q2 is still quite a pricey used buy, but if you can live with a slightly high-mile example like the 26,000-mile 1.6 TDI SE we’ve chosen here for £16,898, it’s a cracking small SUV, with a high-quality interior, neat handling and upmarket looks.

Also consider: 2016 Seat Ateca 1.0 TSI Ecomotive SE Technology Price: £16,827 Mileage: 8509
It’s bigger than the Arona we picked out as a new buy, but that means the Ateca gives you more space. There’s more equipment, too, and it’s smarter inside and nicer to drive. If it’ll fit into your parking space, this 2016 1.0 TSI SE with 8,500 miles and on for £16,827 will make a great buy.
