The Bentley Flying Spur V8 has made its motor show debut in Geneva.

The Flying Spur gets the same twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 as the Continental GT, which means it produces 500bhp and has 488lb ft of torque. The 0-62mph sprint takes 5.2 seconds and top speed is 183mph.

Power is delivered through the same eight-speed automatic gearbox, and the engine features deactivation technology that can shut down four cylinders to use less petrol when cruising.

Official fuel economy is 25.9mpg – a 35% improvement on the even thirstier W12 model. A 90-litre fuel tank gives it a potential range of 520 miles. CO2 emissions have also been reduced, with a rating of 254g/km – significantly lower than the 343g/km of the W12.

The Flying Spur V8 rides on 19-inch wheels, and has adjustable air suspension as standard, allowing the driver to choose from four settings that range from 'Comfort' to 'Sport'.

There are subtle styling differences to distinguish the V8 model from its 12-cylinder sibling. Chromed figure-of-eight exhaust tailpipes and a black finish for the front bumper grille are the most obvious, along with red accents within the Bentley badges.

Buyers looking for an even more luxurious car can specify the Mulliner pack for their Flying Spur. It features a knurled gear lever, indented leather headliner, drilled alloy pedals and 20-inch five-spoke wheels.

The Mulliner model also has two fully adjustable armchair-style seats in the back, each with lumbar support and heating.

There’s a £13,000 price gap between the Continental GT V8 and W12 models. Applying the same difference to the Flying Spur V8, we’d expect the starting price to be around £137,000.

The order book for the model is expected to open immediately after the Geneva motor show, and deliveries will commence in late spring.
