For The A6 Avant has a gorgeous cabin and generous space for four people plus luggage. It also comes well equipped and is available with strong engines.
Against The boot capacity is some way short of a Mercedes E-Class’s, and the A6 isn’t as refined as a 5 Series.
An attractive package – as long as sheer luggage capacity isn’t the be-all and end-all.
The A6 Avant isn’t the biggest executive estate or the most refined – the Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5 Series, respectively, claim those honours – but it’s a well-rounded package with much in its favour. The range is almost entirely diesel-engined, and the big seller is the entry-level 2.0 TDI, because it combines tax-friendly emissions with all the image and kit of pricier models.
Those with richer tastes – and deeper pockets – will look to the six-cylinder, four-wheel-drive models, which have continent-crushing pace and composure.
Although SE trim provides loads of kit and a more forgiving ride, many people will be drawn to the sportier looks – and handling – of the dearer S line models. We can see the appeal, but you pay the price both financially and in ride comfort.
All versions are well equipped, but some of the luxuries on the extensive options list may prove tempting. The all-LED headlights look the business, for example, although they’re not cheap.
