Costs & verdict

Everyday costs, plus how reliable and safe it is

This is certainly not a cheap car, but everything is relative; next to the Aston Martin DB11 Convertible, Bentley Continental GTC and Porsche 911 Cabriolet, it’s a bit of a steal. You can buy a BMW 8 Series or Jaguar F-Type for less, mind.

Lexus has an impeccable record in reliability, sitting at the sharp end as the most reliable brand in our 2020 What Car? Reliability Survey. That’s really impressive, and its illustrious rivals are all some way below (Bentley didn’t feature), meaning you’re more likely to hit trouble in any of those.

As for running costs, the V8 emits a lot of CO2 and swills petrol eagerly, too, but that’s no different from any other rival with similar power. Basically, whether you’re a company car driver or a private buyer, get ready to reach into your pockets deep and often to run one.

Overview

The Lexus LC 500 Convertible isn’t as sharp to drive as a Porsche 911 Cabriolet, but it’s up there with most other rivals for performance, agility, comfort and fun. The naturally aspirated V8 sounds awesome and the LC has one of the nicest interiors in the class.

  • Amazing V8 noise
  • Beautifully made interior
  • Sporty but still comfortable and quiet
  • Awful usability of the infotainment system
  • Tiny rear seats and boot
  • A Porsche 911 is a better driver’s car
