2018 BMW 8 Series – exclusive Reader Test Team preview
BMW has an all-new flagship model on the way: the 8 Series, a luxury four-seat coupé that rivals the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupé and, in its hottest form, the Aston Martin DB11.
The grand tourer has an interior that features the luxury of the 7 Series and BMW's 12.3in digital instrument cluster, plus a 10.3in infotainment touchscreen as standard.
Just two versions of the 8 Series will be available from launch. The range kicks off with the 840d xDrive diesel, which has a 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine producing 315bhp – enough to get the 8 Series from 0-62mph in 4.9sec. Buyers wanting petrol power have the M850i xDrive, with a heady 523bhp from its 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine. It can cover the 0-62mph sprint in 3.7sec – faster than all but the most hardcore versions of the Porsche 911 sports car. A hardcore M8 is also due to arrive near the end of next year, with a V8 petrol engine producing around 600bhp.
A cabriolet and four-door Gran Coupé model will arrive in due course, too.
Prices for the 8 Series start from £76,270, making it a comparative bargain next to the S-Class Coupé, which starts from £102,860.
