Being the final evolution of a line-up of cars that had started with the Porsche 924 back in 1976, the 968 refined its predecessor's impressive driving experience and added a a freshly updated 3.0-litre engine for 237bhp. Throw beefed-up suspension and brakes into the mix and it isn’t hard to see the appeal of the 968.

This is the cheapest way into Porsche 911 ownership: the 1997-2004 generation (or 996, as it's also known). When it first arrived, the 996 wasn't loved by all. Some didn't like the looks, while others didn't believe it to be a true 911, because it was noticeably larger and more modern than its predecessors. Today, the 996 is a lot less controversial, with people simply enjoying the value on offer here, as well as the model's great performance and handling.
Reliability issues with earlier cars mean it's best to buy later models, and make sure there's a full service history.

The original Porsche Cayman rose to vast critical acclaim for the fabulous mid-engined driving experience it served up – and to think people thought it would be nothing more than simply a Boxster with a roof. Early cars suffered with engine problems, but for this budget you can afford one of the later examples. Whether you choose the standard car or the S model, you'll be smitten.
