Car of the Year Awards 2021: Best coupé for practicality

A good coupé isn’t just about style. The trick if it’s to be among the class leaders is that it must feel on point whether you’re enjoying a great road or enduring a terrible commute...

Five-door coupés are understandably popular. They deliver all the usefulness and the plush feel-good factor of the executive classes, but finished with a dose of sports coupé swagger. Yet, even with five doors, there are sometimes compromises with rear passenger comfort in this class; not so with the Arteon.

It challenges rivals such as the Audi A5 Sportback and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé for driver accommodation and trounces them for space in the back. Even tall passengers have space to sprawl in comfort, thanks to acres of leg room, and you can easily get three adults across the 60/40 split seats.

The boot is huge, too – nearly as big as the more conventional Passat’s. It’s arguably more practical than the Passat’s, too, thanks to a wide-opening hatchback that makes loading a buggy easy.

More than that, the Arteon is a confidence-inspiring, comfortable and satisfying drive, with loads of equipment as standard, and is well priced for such a plush, stylish car.
