Car of the Year Awards 2023: Best family car for value
There are several types of family car, but here we’re looking at traditional hatchbacks: large enough to be practical, yet compact enough to be easy and enjoyable to drive...
Skoda Scala 1.0 TSI 110 SE

You could say we’re spoiled for choice in the family car class, especially when Skoda alone gives us two strong options to pick from.
The Skoda Scala and Skoda Octavia both offer more interior space than most rivals, and even the smaller Scala can accommodate four six-footers and their kit with ease. Indeed, we managed to fit seven carry-on suitcases in the boot.

The interior doesn’t feel as swish as the Honda Civic’s, but it is well built. Likewise, while our favourite 1.0-litre petrol engine is punchy and efficient enough, the Civic’s clever fuel-sipping hybrid tech makes it much quieter around town.
Still, what really makes the Scala stand out here is its competitive price. In our preferred trim level (SE), it undercuts not only the bigger Octavia but also last year’s class champion, the Seat Leon. What’s more, it’s not much more expensive than the entry-level Ford Fiesta – a car from the class below.
