Previously, the Q5 Sportback’s engine lineup was fairly simple, with just two engine options available: a 2.0-litre petrol and a 2.0-litre diesel, with both assisted by mild hybrid power.
Our favourite engine of those two is the diesel, which feels eager to set off at low revs and is flexible and effortless in everyday driving. If towing capability is important to you, then the diesel should be the best option.
Opting for that engine in combination with top-spec Edition 1 trim will save you £6056, and you get a whole host of luxurious extras, including a second infotainment touchscreen for the front passenger, electric front seats, 21in alloys, matrix LED headlights and some extra active safety aids.

But that’s not to say that the petrol engine isn’t just as impressive. When we tested it in the regular Q5, it was smooth, punchy and made a nice sporty sound when getting up to speed.
Combining that engine with S line trim will save you up to £5700, and you get bigger 20in alloy wheels, sportier bodykit, sliding rear seats, tinted rear windows, and adaptive air suspension, which will deliver a super smooth, controlled ride at all speeds, even with the larger wheels equipped.
For the biggest saving, you can opt for the recently-announced plug-in hybrid engine, which combines the 2.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor, powered by a 20.7kWh (usable capacity) battery. That battery should be good for 62 miles of range on electric-only driving.
With that engine, the Q5 Sportback will be available exclusively in four-wheel-drive quattro guise, pumping out 295bhp. Picking entry-level Sport trim will save you up to £13,270, and you still get plenty of kit, including three-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control, heated front seats and a 360-degree parking camera.
Stepping up to S line trim with the plug-in hybrid engine will get you the biggest saving of £14,550.
