Ford has announced a number of updates to its EcoSport compact SUV, which will go on sale in the UK this October.

What is it?

The EcoSport is Ford's rival for the likes of the Nissan Juke, Renault Captur and Vauxhall Mokka. Though launched in 2013, it's been a slow-selling model for Ford, and has come under criticism due to its poor mechanical refinement.

For 2015, Ford has announced a series of updates for the model, including the option to specify the car without its boot-mounted spare wheel for the first time. Cars which come without the spare wheel instead get a tyre mobility kit. Other updates will include extra chrome detailing.

To improve its handling, Ford has also dropped the car's ride height by 10mm, and tuned its suspension for greater comfort.

Based on the Ford Fiesta hatchback, the EcoSport is manufactured in India and then shipped to the UK.

What engines can I choose from?

The EcoSport is powered by three engines in the UK. The 1.5-litre TDCi diesel has been updated and now produces 94bhp, while emitting 115g/km of CO2 and returning up to 64.2mpg. The 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine remains unchanged and delivers 123bhp. The 1.5-litre petrol is also unchanged.

Ford says all EcoBoost engines now meet Euro 6 emissions standards.

How much equipment does it come with?

The EcoSport is available in Zetec and Titanium trims. While most features remain the same as before, Ford says leather trim now features on the options list. Also optional is a new winter pack, which adds a heated windscreen, mirrors and front seats, as well as extra ventilation for rear passengers.

How much will it cost

The 2015 Ford EcoSport is priced at Β£14,245. That's competitive against the Renault Captur, which costs Β£14,295, but significantly less than the Β£16,474 Vauxhall Mokka.

How good are its rivals?

Ford's EcoSport is part of the compact SUV segment, and so faces competition from a wide variety of vehicles. Nissan's Juke and the Vauxhall Mokka currently hold two-star ratings on What Car? while the Renault Captur holds four stars. The current Ford EcoSport also has a two-star rating.
