MG plug-in hybrids to get semi-solid-state batteries in 2027
MG's plug-in hybrid models are set to become more efficient and powerful thanks to new semi-solid-state battery technology that will arrive next year.
Announced earlier this year, the new technology, called SolidCore, will first feature on the all-electric MG4 Urban, followed by its introduction into plug-in hybrid variants of the next-generation MG ZS, MG HS and MG S9.
Semi-solid-state batteries use mostly solid-state electrolytes instead of the usual liquid or gel electrolytes, leading to a higher energy density – meaning you can fit more energy into the battery without having to drastically increase its size.
According to MG, the benefits of this tech compared with traditional EV batteries are improved range, faster charging and quicker acceleration. In the case of MG’s plug-in hybrids, the new tech should also allow for more consistent power delivery in a range of driving scenarios – including better resistance to temperature fluctuations.
These new variants will be badged ‘Plug-in Hybrid+’ and will allow the models to use smaller petrol engines. Two set-ups will be available: a 1.1-litre engine with 98bhp, reserved for smaller models, and a 1.5-litre unit with 161bhp for larger models. MG claims these set-ups will be able to accelerate from 0-62mph in less than six seconds. For reference, the current plug-in hybrid MG HS (and our Plug-in Hybrid of the Year) can officially accelerate to 62mph in 6.8sec.
The Plug-in Hybrid+ set-up will also feature a new hybrid gearbox unit, that will aim to maximise efficiency by managing power between the engine and electric motors. MG also claims a five decibel reduction in noise in EV mode compared with traditional PHEV systems.
This new technology will arrive first on next-generation plug-in hybrid versions of the MG ZS, and will be subsequently added to the MG HS and MG S9 SUVs. MG is also developing its driver assistance systems to make them more “mature” and suited to real-world European driving conditions.
